The leadership culture of low challenge and low support is a sobering environment.
The abdicating leader takes a backseat approach to leadership, which means results are low, investment by team members is weak, and very few (if any) staff want to contribute.
You can imagine a variety of scenarios where this plays out:
- a leader with little challenge from above has no sense of need to perform
- a leader coasting toward retirement or job transition has other priorities (outside the workplace) in mind
- an industry with little innovation, where the process runs on autopilot
