4 Ways to Celebrate Your Dad This Father’s Day

Last year, my wife told me to block off the Friday and Saturday before Father’s Day.

“Don’t make any plans,” she said, “I have an idea.”

That Friday, we hit the road up I-95 to spend a night in Baltimore, watch the Orioles, take in the aquarium and the Inner Harbor and enjoy a weekend of celebration.

My first Father’s Day was pretty incredible, but our weekend in Baltimore ranked right up there. Taking my daughter to her first Orioles’ game, watching her eyes light up when the dolphins jumped out of the water at the aquarium and spending time celebrating made for great memories.

While some dads say they prefer a day alone on Father’s Day to do as they please, make time this Father’s Day to celebrate and be with the dad in your life:

take a roadtrip
You don’t have to go far, and you probably don’t have to pay for much more than gas and food. There are great day trips within an hour of Richmond: the mountains, the beach, DC, Williamsburg. You don’t have to travel far to find something fun to do with dad!

plan dad’s favorite meal
Let dad place his order for tonight’s dinner — then go pick up what you need and put together a nice meal. Dad will love the food and the time you put into it, and you’ll all eat good!

This free, annual event will include fun for the whole family. Great food, games on the field, swimming in the pool, and the “Fastest Dad in Richmond Competition.” Learn more at FirstThingsRichmond.org.

spend time with dad
Let Father’s Day set the stage for the rest of the year. Investing in the lives of your kids and spending time together is the ideal way to celebrate Father’s Day, no matter what you’re doing together. So get the kids together, make a plan and celebrate together.

Father’s Day isn’t always a highlight of the year for everyone. Even if you’re not looking forward to the day, there are some great ideas for how to turn this Father’s Day into a good one coming in Sunday’s RTD. Keep an eye out for it.

I hope this Father’s Day is the start of a great year for you and your kids. Let the great memories begin!
