I keep having this nervous itch to post some new idea or new thought to Facebook. Or Twitter. But I can’t.
Well, I could…but I won’t.
Why?
I gave it up.
Not permanently. I gave it up because I know that there’s more to life. These two tools are so ingrained into my life that giving them up forces me to change my habit.
This itch tells me I should have stopped a long time ago.*
This itch reminds me that I am on a pilgrimage, following in Christ’s footsteps to the cross. This itch is about reflection and remembering that Jesus was suffering, as a gift for us.
Lent is not easy. Lent is not a weight loss plan. It is not a gimmick or a fad.
Lent means nothing if you don’t take it seriously.
Lent is about centering yourself in Christ, reflecting on his long, hard road to the cross, so that on Easter morning, you can give an honest answer to this question:
When I wake up on Resurrection Sunday morning, how will I be different?
How will you be different that morning?
* I have stopped using Facebook before, for about a month each time. Just not for Lent.
Thanks to RachelHeldEvans.com for this
question and so much more info about Lent.
This is the first of a few periodic reflections on Lent this year. Don’t know much about Lent? Check out Jim Denison’s article, Lent for Baptists. It doesn’t matter if you aren’t Baptist — this is just “for Baptists” ’cause Baptists don’t really know what Lent is about.
