There are some friends we don’t exchange gifts with at Christmas. Really close friends, friends we enjoy spending time with throughout the year, and trying to find the right Christmas gift would be a hopeless venture.
Unless you know exactly the right gift.
I gave that gift one year.
I guess I have always been resourceful. If I don’t know where to get something, I figure it out.
When I decided I needed to get my friend a football jersey, I knew I didn’t want one of those imitation jerseys from the store. We had friends on the football team, and this gift would represent the friendships wehad with those guys.
But I couldn’t get it from those guys, either. NCAA regulations or something like that.
I finally found my source. A real, game-worn jersey. I paid for it and gleamed with excitement. I was so excited. I couldn’t wait to give it to my friend. (I may have gotten one for myself, too).
I think it was after a Christmas party, I pulled out the somewhat-neatly-wrapped box (seriously, I was a college student. Where was I going to get wrapping paper?) and handed it over.
“Oh, you didn’t have to do this.”
Of course I did. You don’t know what this is. I probably had a smile a mile wide. I was ready.
This was pure, unadulterated excitement. I couldn’t wait.
Those out of left field gifts are some of the best. I love giving when they aren’t expecting it.
What kind of extravagant, appropriate, out of left field kind of generous gift are you giving someone this year?
